Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel.

L'éducation est l'allumage d'une flamme, pas le remplissage d'un navire.

cognitive Bias

Intro

Tools:

  • UXCD – (User Interface Core Guide). This is a tool created by Wolf Alexanyan, an IT worker with a passion for Cognitive Bias (CB). His angle in a nutshell is that many of the failures in communication, teamwork, and life arise because two or more people can look at the same situation and have different perceptions or conclusions. Culture, life experience, etc is the simplistic way to explain away these differences, however sometimes you need to create common ground, and uncover the specific reasons for varying interpretations. Awareness of cognitive biases provides us a sort of technical way to think about this problem. It also removes some of the emotion and judgement. Group work aside, we all have cognitive bias which can lead to false conclusions.
Wolf Alexenyan has thought a lot about this problem and his slick tool is one of the best I have seen to explore and learn about CBs. In his own words learning about CB is akin to reading a user manual for the human brain. His use case different from most physicians and includes using CB to improve teamwork, enhance customer service, and write more compelling and user sensitive gaming scripts.
This is a bit mind blowing to me, and an example of the value of mixing with types other than ourselves. While CB can provide great insights, and reduce errors in medicine, it can also be a useful tool to improve teamwork and communication with colleagues, and patients.
